Story 21 | Wanja and the Flying Bicycle (Grade 1-5 level)
Wanja skipped beside her father, practically breathing on the window of the bustling duka overflowing with bicycles. Nestled among the rows of ordinary bikes, one gleamed under the bright lights, making Wanja's heart thump like a drum – a flying bicycle! This wasn't your everyday bike. It had a sleek, silver frame, wide handlebars that curved upwards like a snake's neck, and most importantly, two enormous, see-through wings that folded neatly against its sides.
"Wow!" Wanja gasped, her eyes wide as saucers. "Baba, can we get one? Please, please?"
Her father chuckled, ruffling her hair affectionately. "Those flying bicycles are quite expensive, Wanja. Maybe for your birthday..."
But Wanja's birthday felt like ages away, and the thought of waiting filled her with impatience. Every day on their way to school, she'd sneak peeks at the flying bicycle shop, a longing burning bright in her chest.
One sunny afternoon, an idea sparked in Wanja's mind like a crackling fire. She began tackling extra chores with gusto – washing cooking pots without being asked, cleaning her room until it sparkled, even helping Mama fetch water from the distant wells. Finally, after weeks of hard work, Wanja had saved up enough money.
The next day, with a secret smile playing on her lips, Wanja marched into the duka. The owner, a man with a bushy mustache that would make a monkey jealous, raised an eyebrow in surprise when he saw her. But Wanja, chin held high like a brave little warrior, placed her tin can piggy bank on the counter with a satisfying clink.
"One flying bicycle, tafadhali," she declared.
The shop owner's eyes widened. He had never sold a flying bicycle to a child before, but seeing the determination etched on Wanja's face, he couldn't refuse. Soon, Wanja was the proud owner of the most magnificent flying bicycle in the entire neighborhood.
The next morning, Wanja woke up with butterflies fluttering in her stomach. She carefully unfolded the bike's wings, revealing a shimmering blue that seemed to capture the morning light. Taking a deep breath, she climbed onto the bicycle and pedaled with all her might. At first, the bike wobbled a little, but then, something magical happened.
The wings whooshed to life, lifting Wanja gently off the ground. She was flying! The houses below looked like tiny toy blocks, and the world sprawled out before her in a breathtaking view. Laughter bubbled up in her chest as she soared through the sky, the wind whistling through her hair. School had never seemed closer. Wanja swooped down, landing gracefully in the school yard, right in front of her classmates whose jaws dropped to the ground in astonishment. Her teacher, Madam Amina, nearly fainted! But Wanja, with a triumphant grin, explained how she'd saved up for the bike and learned to fly it herself.
That day, Wanja became a legend. She was the girl who flew to school on a flying bicycle. And while some grown-ups grumbled about safety rules, most people were impressed by her courage and determination. Wanja, however, just beamed. She had learned a valuable lesson – that with hard work and a sprinkle of belief, even the wildest dreams could take flight.
